After a year's absence, the Prize Patrol visited all four campuses of Demopolis City Schools Thursday, September 30, to award more than $25,000 in grants to teachers.

The Foundation returned to the practice of awarding grants this fall after the funds budgeted last year were used to make up the gap left by the state Department of Education's decision to eliminate teacher-fee money because of budget shortfalls.

The Foundation's funds this year were divided between grants and teacher-fee money. In addition to the grants, another $25,000 will be divided among all the certified educators in the school system.

Further, the $1,000 Hugh A. Lloyd Excellence in Education Award, traditionally given to a teacher that exemplifies the best in education, will be split among the four school libraries.

The Foundation's Grants Committee reviewed 25 applications that asked for a total of $58,640.39. Of those 17 were fully or partially funded for a total of $25,061.63.

Broken down by campus, Westside Elementary received $3,084.10; U.S. Jones Elementary, $11,009.06; Demopolis Middle, $4,581, and Demopolis High, $6,387.47.

Since the Foundation began its grants program in 1994, more than $806,000 has gone into classrooms for projects, programs and equipment that the school system cannot pay for. It's all part of the Foundation's mission to foster and promote excellence in Demopolis public schools by providing the resources needed to influence the success of all students.

Grants are provided through Foundation memberships, fund-raising activities and interest on investments.
